Thinking About Risk

In his Chronicle of Higher Education article "Risk Managing or Risk Averse," Elizabethtown College president Carl J. Strikwerda asks, "Do we embrace risk or avoid it? How can we set up elaborate systems to guard against what could go wrong while simultaneously experimenting with new initiatives that carry huge risks of failure?" This is an important question and one that several members of the UA community have raised as part of the Campaign for Common Sense. Is it time to establish a more comprehensive institutional risk philosophy?
