Allow departments to purchase electric cars

Policy 6.20 regarding the purchase of used vehicles requires special justification for vehicles not considered alternative fuel vehicles.  Electric cars may not be purchased because they use gasoline.

Notes

Thanks to Ted Nasser, Director of Purchasing with Procurement and Contracting Services, for providing the following response:

Electric vehicles qualify as 'alternative fuel' (e.g. E-85, Electric, CHG) and are allowed to be purchased by University departments. Hybrid vehicles (i.e. the Toyota Prius) are also allowable according to Arizona Executive order No. 2010-14: Governor's policy on climate change. This Executive Order also requires at least 75% of our fleet to be alternative fuel, which is why we require a justification when a non-alternative fuel vehicle is being requested.

Electric vehicles are considered alternative fuel vehicles by the State of Arizona per Arizona Revised Statutes (A.R.S.) § 1-215.

Have you run into a scenario in which the University did not allow the purchase of an all-electric vehicle such as a Nissan Leaf or a Mitsubishi i-MiEV?
